Äthiopien zählt zu den ältesten Kulturnationen der Welt und gilt als die wichtigste Volkswirtschaft in Ostafrika. Die Afrikanische Union hat ihren Sitz in der Hauptstadt Addis Abeba. Äthiopien hatte in letzter Zeit viele Erfolge vorzuweisen. In Addis Abeba trifft man auf die einzige Tramlinie in ganz Afrika. Kürzlich wurde die Eisenbahnlinie nach Dschibuti eröffnet. Auch die letzte Dürre hat Äthiopien sehr gut, fast vorbildlich gemeistert. Nach außen zumindest. Das Land am Horn von Afrika ist umgeben von Ländern wie Somalia und dem Südsudan, die sich im Krieg befinden. Äthiopien hat sehr viele Flüchtlinge aus diesen Ländern aufgenommen. Der Westen ist daran interessiert, dass dieser stabile Pfeiler in Afrika erhalten bleibt, deshalb hält er sich aus diplomatischen Überlegungen mit Kritik zurück!

Fakt ist, die Globalisierung hat auch Äthiopien eingeholt. Seit Jahren verkauft die Regierung riesige Landflächen an internationale Investoren vor allem aus China, Indien und der Türkei, die teilweise diese Flächen brauchen, um ihre eigene Bevölkerung besser ernähren zu können. Durch den Anbau von Monokulturen werden dem Boden wertvolles Wasser und Nährstoffe entzogen. Es werden paradoxerweise Erdbeeren, Heidelbeeren und Tulpen in riesigen Glashäusern angebaut und exportiert. Durch massive Abholzung ist von den waldreichen Gebieten im Norden nichts mehr übrig. Die dort seit Jahrzehnten lebenden Bauern werden  enteignet und vertrieben, es kommt zu Zwangsumsiedelungen ganzer Dörfer zugunsten ausländischer Investoren. Die Bevölkerung hat nichts von den Gewinnen der Investoren und lebt großteils weiterhin in unbeschreiblicher Armut. Das führt neben zusätzlichen ethnischen Konflikten immer wieder zu massiven blutigen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Armee und Demonstranten. Die Regierung scheint ethnische Konflikte zu schüren, damit das Volk nicht gemeinsam die Stimme erheben kann. Aktuell reagierte sie darauf mit einem sechsmonatigen Ausnahmezustand. Davon hört man kaum etwas in der westlichen Presse.
